Yes, You Can Prevent Foot Odor!

There is a reason why our feet sweat and can get smelly. In just one pair of feet, there are 250,000 sweat glands!

But sweat alone doesn’t have a bad odor. It’s really the dark, damp environment that we keep our feet in with socks and shoes that can trap odor-causing bacteria. These bacteria love to hang out and multiply on sweaty feet.

Some people have a condition called hyperhidrosis, or extra-sweaty feet, and bacteria thrive in this setting. The bottom line is that bacteria cause foot odor, so let’s tackle getting rid of these pesky pests.

Steps To Eliminate Foot Odor

Reduce the sweating to discourage bacteria with these easy steps:

  •  Clean your feet every day with warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly – especially between the toes.

  • Dry the feet further by sprinkling on over-the-counter anti-fungal powder.

  • Wear clean socks every day and change mid-day if they get damp. Choose socks that wick away moisture such as wools and special athletic knits.

  • Select shoes made of breathable materials like canvas, leather or linen – not plastic.

  • Try to alternate shoes so that they dry out between wearings.

  • Spray the shoes that you are not wearing with a disinfectant spray to kill germs, and then dry in the sun.

  • Shoes that are washable like sneakers should be washed regularly and then dried completely.

  • Going barefoot helps air out your feet, but make sure that they are protected from injury and from outdoor bacteria with comfortable sandals.

  • Try soaking your feet in warm water with 2 bags of black tea or 3 tablespoons of baking soda.

If after trying these methods you still suffer from excessive foot odor, please call us for an evaluation appointment. We can help!
